What is a Doula? (said doo-la)

The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek and is now used to refer to a woman who helps another woman.

"Doula" refers to a supportive companion (other than a friend or loved one) who is professionally trained/certified to provide support. A doula performs no clinical tasks.

To distinguish between the  types of doulas, one may refer to "antepartum doulas"(during pregnancy), "birth doulas"(during labor and delivery) and "postpartum doulas" (time period after birth).
